Creating markets for local sustainably managed forests

Member Benefits

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certification – Northwest markets for FSC certified products have grown considerably in the last few years, but getting forest management certification on your own is an expensive proposition. Northwest Certified Forestry provides an inexpensive and streamlined process for becoming certified.

Sales Referrals – By leveraging our connections with FSC manufacturers, distributors, and key end-user groups, Northwest Certified Forestry actively pursues new sales opportunities on our members’ behalf. The program also directly promotes individual members online, in marketing materials and at events.

Market Development – Northwest Certified Forestry pursues a comprehensive marketing program on our members’ behalf, including regular presentations to wood products buyers, media promotion, and direct outreach to buyers at conferences and events. Market development efforts focus on building demand in key end-user groups such as green building associations, municipal governments, and sustainability-oriented businesses.

Supply Chain Development
– FSC certification doesn’t end with the landowner. All companies that manufacture or distribute FSC products must also be certified in a process called ‘Chain of Custody’ to ensure that certified material isn’t mixed with non-certified and that FSC claims are valid. Here in the Pacific Northwest, where FSC distribution is well established, Northwest Certified Forestry actively targets and recruits manufacturers for certification.

Advocacy – Northwest Certified Forestry’s parent organization, Northwest Natural Resource Group, maintains membership and influence in key organizations such as the FSC, the U.S. Green Building Council, and the Northwest EcoBuilding Guild, and advocates on behalf of our members. Our advocacy works to insure that the policy and standards development of these organizations best serves members needs and interests.

Discounted Educational Workshops – Northwest Certified Forestry hosts four educational workshops per year that focus on various aspects of sustainable forest management and marketing. Members receive priority registration and a minimum 20% discount on workshop fees over the general public.

Agency & Association Referrals – Several agencies and associations provide excellent forestry related services in the Northwest. Rather than duplicate services already provided, Northwest Certified Forestry maintains information on the work of other agencies and associations and refers members as appropriate.

Newsletter and Email Updates – Members receive regular updates and pertinent information via email and may post approved messages to the membership.

Web-based Services – The Members Only section of this website is under construction, but will soon contain a variety of information services for members.
